7 Fun Summer Activities for Seniors Enjoying Retirement
With active retirement living comes the freedom to do whatever your heart desires! If you live in Maine, you’ll never run out of fun activities to experience. While this is true any time of year, it’s especially true in the summertime, when the mild, warm weather opens up all kinds of possibilities. We’ve put together some of our favorite summer activities for seniors to enjoy this season!
First Friday Art Walk
The First Friday Art Walk in Portland is something you can look forward to the first Friday night of the summer months! The streets of Portland open their art galleries, studios, and museums, with many street vendors displaying their treasures from 5-8 pm. It’s the perfect way to enjoy an evening in Portland – and since you’re already in the city, why not grab a bite to eat afterwards!
Take a Day Trip North (or South!)
There are so many unique places to visit in Maine that make for an easy, enjoyable day trip! If you’re located in Southern Maine like we are at Cumberland Crossing by OceanView, you have a couple of options: north or south! Head north up the coast to explore the endless nature trails, beaches and quaint seaside towns; Camden and Rockland make for a lovely afternoon with their little boutiques and delicious restaurants. Or, head south towards towns like Kennebunkport and Ogunquit for a classic, beachy, yet upscale Maine feel.
Hit the Golf Course
Golf isn’t just fun and relaxing – it’s excellent for your health! At Cumberland Crossing, we offer our Golf FORE Life program, which includes complimentary access to two of the most stunning greens in the region: Falmouth Country Club and the Val Halla Golf Course & Recreation Center. Make your golf game the best it’s ever been this summer!
Enjoy a Sea Dogs’ Game
Take me out to the ball game! There is no better summer activity than a baseball game. The Portland Sea Dogs are a Maine classic, and a baseball game at the locally-famous Hadlock Field isn’t to be missed! Portland’s minor league baseball team, also an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have notoriously feel-good fans and a great atmosphere. It makes for a fun, easygoing afternoon or evening! Check out this year’s schedule here.
Go for a Hike or Nature Walk
There is no better way to stay active, relieve stress and take in the beauty of Maine’s summer than taking a walk or hike. There are so many trails, land preserves and wilderness areas, nature is always easily accessible and within convenient distance!
Take a Dip
Cool off on a hot summer’s day by diving into one of Maine’s best natural resources – crystal clear, freshwater lakes! With more than 6,000 lakes across the state, you have ample swimming holes to choose from. Not only is swimming an amazing way to beat the heat – it’s also a wonderful workout and key to staying healthy!
Grow Your Own Produce
A lot of people have been getting back to the basics, especially over the past year with the stay-at-home orders. Roadside stands have been cropping up all over the state, with people selling their home-grown produce, eggs and even honey. Whether you have space for a farmstead or a few window boxes, starting to grow your own herbs, vegetables and fruits can be fun and rewarding!
