Ideal Activities for Autumn in Maine
If you are lucky enough to consider this state home, you know there is nothing more wonderful than autumn in Maine. The crisp air, beautiful foliage, and unique fall activities make this time of year feel extra special as we bid adieu to summer.
To celebrate fall, we’ve put together some fun ideas to make the most of the season, so throw on your coziest sweater and enjoy!
Pick Out the Perfect Pumpkin
Pumpkins are festive and add that pop of color to your life, a true testament to autumn. Whether you use your pumpkins to bake, decorate or carve, picking out your perfect pumpkin straight from the patch is especially fun. Some of our favorite pumpkin picking farms in Maine include:
- Randall Orchards – Standish, ME
- Thompsons Orchards – New Gloucester, ME
- Windy Hill Farm – Windham, ME
- Wolfe’s Neck Farm – Freeport, ME
- Douglas Hill Orchard – Sebago, ME
Take a Nature Walk (or Hike!)
There are so many stunning trails, mountains and preserved land to enjoy, especially with the fiery backdrop of changing leaves. The options are essentially limitless, but some favorites of ours include the Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust, Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport, and Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. All properties offer clearly marked and networked trails that range from easy to moderate depending what you are looking for. Prepare to enjoy spectacular sights around every bend!
Go Apple Picking
Apples are one of the highlights of the autumn season! Apple picking is a great way to spend a couple of hours in the fresh air. There is something nostalgic and comforting about finding the perfect apples to fill your bag. Just make sure you stop for apple cider and donuts before you head home! There are apple orchards all over Maine, but some of our favorites include:
- Randall Orchards & Cider Mill – Standish, ME
- Ricker Hill Orchards – Turner, ME
- Brackett’s Orchards – Limington, ME
- Wallingford’s Fruit House – Auburn, ME
- Meadow Brook Farm – Raymond, ME
Spend a Weekend Leaf Peeping
Autumn in Maine means the trees turn into bold reds, bright oranges and breathtaking yellows. There’s a reason people travel from all over the country to experience this phenomenon! Because foliage lasts for such a short period of time, it’s best to take advantage while we are in peak season. A “leaf peeping” road trip – even if it’s just for an afternoon – is a fun way to simply enjoy the view! Head north to catch the peak of foliage season, or even make your way into New Hampshire for a mountainous backdrop. Just make sure you bring your camera!
Make Homemade Soup
Is there anything cozier than a steaming hot bowl of homemade soup in the fall? The act of cooking can be so therapeutic, and knowing that the outcome will be a delicious, healthy meal to enjoy makes it all the more special. Try to use seasonal ingredients such as squash, pumpkins, or root vegetables or give the classic chicken noodle soup a go. You can’t go wrong with homemade soup!
